Luke 24:38 (ESV) 38 And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts?
Why Are You Troubled? (Luke 24:38)
- Jesus' resurrection provides assurance for our past, present, and future, addressing our deepest fears and doubts.
- Through Christ, our past sins are forgiven, and we are made new, regardless of our history.
- Jesus is always present with us, acting as a steadfast anchor and interceding on our behalf.
- Our future is secure in Christ, who has prepared a place for all believers in the Father's house.
The Disciples' Fear and Jesus' Question
After His crucifixion, the disciples were filled with fear and struggled to believe the reports of Jesus' resurrection. It was into this atmosphere of doubt that Jesus appeared, offering peace and asking a profound question: "Why are you troubled?" This question wasn't an accusation but an invitation to find assurance in Him, even when they knew Him intimately and still struggled with doubt.
Assurance for the Past, Present, and Future
The sermon explains how the reality of the resurrection provides complete assurance for every aspect of a believer's life.
- Assurance for the Past: Everyone has a past marred by sin. However, Jesus' resurrection makes repentance and forgiveness possible. Like the Apostle Paul, believers can be transformed by God's mercy, reminding us that our past does not define our future in Christ.
- Assurance for the Present: Jesus promised His continuing presence, a promise reinforced in both the Great Commission and Hebrews 13:5. He is not a distant savior but an active intercessor (Romans 8:34) and a steadfast anchor (Hebrews 6:19) who offers support through life's storms.
- Assurance for the Future: Through His ascension and the promise made in John 14, Jesus assures believers that a place is prepared for them. Our future is secure. This stands in stark contrast to those not in Christ, who are warned to be troubled about their eternal future.
Application for Believers
The core message is a call to trust in the resurrection and its implications. By anchoring our faith in Christ, we can find peace that transcends our past mistakes and present circumstances. We are encouraged to draw strength from His continual presence and intercession, allowing the truth of His victory over death to calm our troubled hearts.
