Chapter 1:
The Importance of Understanding the Times

Introduction
“Of Issachar, men who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do.” – 1 Chronicles 12:32

The Bible frequently underscores the significance of discernment. Amid the noise and distractions of daily life, the ability to perceive the spiritual and moral climate around us is both a gift and a calling. The sons of Issachar have long been cited as an example, possessing the keen understanding of the times and an awareness of what should be done. Today, as we face moral shifts, societal challenges, and layered complexities, the need for Christians to act with a similar awareness is greater than ever.

World History
History has shown us that discernment is paramount in times of upheaval. For instance, during the Reformation, men like Martin Luther discerned the spiritual corruption of their era and boldly proclaimed Biblical truths, igniting massive reforms. Likewise, the sons of Issachar recognized the spiritual and political context of their time, paving the way for David's kingship. Just as they heeded the signs of their times, we, too, must be vigilant and responsive to the shifts in our world.

Understanding Biblical Context
The sons of Issachar were not ordinary individuals. They were deeply rooted in wisdom, understanding both the spiritual and political landscape of Israel. This insight wasn't accidental—it stemmed from their obedience to God and their attentiveness to His Word. Their recognition that it was the right time to crown David as king was rooted in scripture and prophecy. This serves as a reminder that discernment requires both spiritual sensitivity and scriptural literacy.

When Jesus admonished the Pharisees in Matthew 16:2-3, He criticized their inability to recognize the "signs of the times," though they could interpret weather patterns. Similarly, Romans 13:11 exhorts believers to "wake from sleep" and recognize the urgency of the moment. These scriptures challenge us to engage with the present while grounded in eternal Biblical truths.

Illustration
Imagine a captain navigating a ship through foggy waters. Without instruments or a clear understanding of the tides, the vessel risks collision. But with the right knowledge and tools, the captain can steer safely to shore. This is the role discernment plays in our spiritual lives—offering guidance amid confusion and ensuring we are aligned with God's will.

Exploring Supporting Scriptures
  • Matthew 16:2-3 describes how Jesus rebuked those who failed to see the spiritual significance of their era. They could read the physical weather but were blind to moral and spiritual truths surrounding them.
  • Romans 13:11 reminds believers of the urgency of recognizing their time, calling them to wakefulness and action because salvation draws nearer.
Both passages emphasize vigilance and awareness, urging Christians today to develop discernment as a means of aligning with God's purposes.

Reflection Question
  • How does Jesus' critique of the Pharisees in Matthew 16 relate to our modern struggle to prioritize spiritual discernment in a noisy world?
Application
Understanding the times is not a passive acknowledgment but an active response. To emulate the wisdom of the sons of Issachar:

1. Deepen Your Scriptural Knowledge
  • Spend time in God’s Word daily. It provides the foundation for interpreting spiritual and cultural shifts. Study passages like Matthew 16 and Romans 13 with an intentional focus on how they relate to your life today.
2. Practice Discernment in Decision-Making
  • Make a habit of asking, "Does this decision honor God and align with His Word?" Whether it's personal or community-related, ensure that your choices are rooted in Biblical values.
3. Engage in Prayer and Reflection
  • Prayer sharpens our spiritual sensitivity. Ask God for the wisdom to understand the times and the courage to act accordingly.
4. Build a Faithful Community
  • Surround yourself with believers who challenge and encourage you to grow spiritually. Discernment flourishes in the community where principles of accountability and shared wisdom are affirmed.

Practical Exercise: This week, take one aspect of your life (e.g., a decision, a challenge, or even a worldview), and ask yourself how Biblical truths from 1 Chronicles 12, Matthew 16, or Romans 13 apply to it. Journaling your reflections can be a powerful way to grow in this area.

Short Story
Emma, a young professional, found herself struggling to reconcile her values with her company’s sudden shift toward unethical practices. Fearing for her job, she hesitated to act. One day, during her morning Bible study, she came across Romans 13:11. The verse reminded her of the importance of living intentionally for Christ, discerning the right path even under pressure. With renewed courage, Emma brought her concerns to her team, suggesting ethical adjustments to their policies. Her initiative not only inspired colleagues but also strengthened her own faith, showing her what it means to “understand the times.”

Closing Challenge
Understanding the times is no longer optional for believers; it is a necessity. When the sons of Issachar acted with discernment, they aligned with God’s will and led Israel in fulfilling His plans. This is our calling today. We must be vigilant, rooted in scripture, and responsive to God's prompting.

Final Reflection Question
  • What steps can you take this week to deepen your ability to discern the spiritual and moral climate in your life, community, or workplace?

Now is the time to wake up, study His Word, and engage with the world through His guidance. By trusting God to develop your discernment, you can confidently say, as the sons of Issachar might have, "I understand the times, and I know what I must do."
